ISO 19650 - Building Information Modelling (BIM).

ISO 19650 - Building Information Modelling (BIM).

ISO 19650 - Building Information Modelling (BIM).

ISO 19650 is the leading international standard for information management in construction using Building Information Modelling (BIM).

First introduced in 2018 and subsequently expanded with additional parts, ISO 19650 helps organizations manage project and asset information throughout the lifecycle of a built asset. ISO 19650 helps organizations manage project and asset information in a structured way throughout the lifecycle of a built asset, from design and construction to operation and maintenance.

The standard is based on internationally recognised collaborative working principles. It focuses on clear information requirements, defined responsibilities, controlled workflows, and the use of a Common Data Environment (CDE) to ensure that all project participants rely on accurate and up-to-date information.

ISO 19650 is applicable to asset owners, designers, contractors, consultants, and facility managers, regardless of project size or sector. It is widely used in infrastructure, buildings, and public projects to improve coordination, reduce rework, and support better decision-making through reliable digital information.

RIGCERT provides certification services for BIM information management systems in accordance with the ISO 19650 series. The certification process is transparent and performed by competent auditors familiar with digital construction workflows and project delivery practices.

Whether the objective is to improve collaboration, meet BIM requirements in tenders, or strengthen control over project data, ISO 19650 certification supports consistent and reliable information management across the asset lifecycle.

ISO 19650 is the international standard dedicated to the management of information in construction projects using Building Information Modelling (BIM).

As construction projects become increasingly digital and collaborative—relying on shared models, cloud platforms, and real-time coordination—the need for structured, reliable, and traceable information management has become essential for controlling cost, time, and quality.

The standard provides a comprehensive framework for implementing an information management process across the entire asset lifecycle, enabling organizations to define information requirements, manage responsibilities, control workflows, and ensure that project teams work using consistent and verified data.

Structured using the same high-level framework as other ISO management standards, ISO 19650 can be integrated with quality, information security, or asset management systems. This allows organizations to manage project information within existing processes without duplication or fragmentation.

At the core of the standard are requirements that ensure information is created, reviewed, approved, and shared through a Common Data Environment (CDE). This controlled workflow supports transparency, traceability, and accountability while reducing errors, misunderstandings, and costly rework.

A distinctive feature of ISO 19650 is its focus on clearly defined roles, information delivery planning, naming conventions, and status codes. Organizations apply these requirements to guarantee that all project participants rely on accurate and up-to-date information at every stage of the project.

The standard is relevant to asset owners, designers, contractors, consultants, and facility managers, regardless of project size or sector. It helps organizations meet BIM requirements in tenders, improve collaboration, and maintain control over digital project data.

In an industry where fragmented communication often leads to delays and disputes, ISO 19650 brings structure, consistency, and international recognition to how construction information is managed. It transforms digital modelling into a reliable decision-making tool rather than just a design technology.

RIGCERT provides certification services for information management systems in accordance with the ISO 19650 series. Our auditors understand construction workflows and BIM processes, supporting organizations in demonstrating competence, reliability, and effective collaboration in digital project delivery.

The ISO 19650 certification for BIM information management systems is granted following a successful initial certification audit, performed in two stages by qualified and impartial auditors.

The certification confirms that the organization has implemented processes for managing project information in accordance with the ISO 19650 requirements and is capable of controlling, sharing, and maintaining reliable information throughout the asset lifecycle.

The certification is valid for three years. During this period, annual surveillance audits are conducted to verify that the information management processes remain compliant and continue to function effectively in real projects.

If surveillance audits are not performed within the required timeframe, or if major nonconformities are identified and not corrected, the certification may be suspended or withdrawn.

At the end of the three-year cycle, the organization may undergo a recertification audit carried out under conditions similar to the initial certification audit, confirming the continued suitability and effectiveness of the BIM information management system.
